Project to tackle homophobic bullying in schools [16 Apr 2008|04:06pm]

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let you know about a new project to tackle homophobic bullying and violence in schools. It's called the School Angels.

I have just finished a music video called "Somebody's Baby" to help bring awareness to this issue. Please take a look at it and let me know what you think.

Here's the link on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3tKcPHRlX4

The official site is www.schoolangels.com.au

By Way Of Introduction [17 Jan 2007|10:05am]

Just thought I'd introduce myself; my name is Yuri, and within a few months my partner nverzeanu and I shall be migrating from San Francisco to Australia, Sydney to be precise. Well, I'll be emigrating, he's returning, native Sydneysider that he is.

We have family and friends there, and look forward to hanging with them, but it's always nice to make new acquaintances as well. Hopefully LJ might be a functional spot to meet some gay Aussies of any gender with whom we have some stuff in common and can get to know - both in the virtual world of LiveJournal and on the ground once we land.

We're social, friendly blokes. Not quite clubkids anymore (never were much for the warehouse thumpa scene), but always up for a few drinks with friends at the local gay pub (I sure liked his old haunt, the Newtown Hotel) or whatever.

Check out either of our journals and interests and etc and say hi if you'd like! I'd love to "friend" a few more gay Aussies and get to know folks before we land. Not that I'm naively nervous or anything about the big move (he said, donning helmet against dropbear attacks).

And of course if I have any blazingly stupid questions about life Down Under, gay or otherwise, that only a self-absorbed Yank could ask, I'll probably ask 'em here ...

Looking for activity buddies [14 Jan 2007|04:39pm]

Hi everyone!

I'm in Sydney until the end of February on work experience and don't know many people here. I'm a 22 year old guy of Asian descent and I'm looking for people to hang with, explore Sydney with, do stupid tourist thing with - and generally just meet new people for friendship. I'm here by myself and don't really feel like hanging out in bars or clubs by myself. Check out my journal, have a chat with me if you want to know more - and I do hope to hear from some of you - maybe catch up for a coffee or something.

Frankly - I'm sick of being by myself so look me up.

Hi everyone, hope you had a great Christmas without too many cares.

Sadly, sometimes Christmas is far from care-free, with the costs and stresses of getting supplies getting some people down that they can almost forget it is a time to celebrate. I'm happy to tell you that there IS a solution.

From the bottom of my heart, I can recommend the Chrisco Christmas hamper club...

With a little bit of planning, you can spend the year paying off supplies little by little. You will hardly notice that the money has gone each week, but come Christmas time, it will all add up to a wonderful hamper of Christmas goods being delievered to your house. The sooner you order and start paying, the smaller your weekly/fortnightly/mothly (whatever suits you best) payments will be.

The full range of hamper choices can be viewed online, or you can request a catalogue by calling 1800 28 28 28.

It may sound like a well-worn advertising slogan, but never a truer word was spoken when they say you can save for a magical Christmas with Chrisco.

I am not a troll, nor do I make any profit from posting this. I simply believe in this program, and am sure you will too if you give it a go.

My niece is doing a 1,500 word essay on the following for uni...

any help with answers to questions would be much appreciated :)

1. Australia has been characterised as a hetero-normative culture. What does this mean
and what implications does this have for individuals in society?

2. Why do gay male identities and lesbian identities attract different forms of social

3. Socialisation is the process by which we learn appropriate social behaviours and
norms. Describe some of the ways we are socialised into gender roles.

4. How might ‘masculinity’ be theorised in contemporary Australian society? In what
ways and why has this changed in recent times?

5. What is the normative form of the family in Australia? How and why has this
changed? What alternative family forms are developing?

6. Compare and contrast the Weberian and Marxist analyses of modern society. What
are modernity’s defining characteristics and how can we theorise them?

7. Are we living in a post-modern society? Why/ why not?

8. Power is a contested concept in sociology. Compare two analyses of power. Which
one is more useful? Why?

new member intro [24 Mar 2006|10:25pm]

well... i guess we can all assume im either gay or gay friendly and live in sydney or have some equally perplexing attraction to it... yes... awkward moment /insert>

buaha... im trying to force myself out into sydneys queer scene in an attempt to understand that im NOT sydney's only lesbo. that and the constant staying at home in the dark, staring at my computer screen is starting to do funny things to my retinas.

so we've established that im a poof of sorts in sydney AND i relate to my paper-weight occaisonally reffered to as a computer better than (in the flesh) earthlings (unless you have an unnatural number of teeth and collect unwanted limbs).

im 21... which isnt as interesting as i pretend it is, i've lost the thrill of trying to get into clubs without being asked for ID. um... i live in the north shore and pretend to be a snob when no-one's watching. i just temporarily deffered my degree in natural medicine (homeopathy if you know what it is, sounds a little ironic doesnt it). i work in a video store which can be mentally repressive at times.

my idea of the perfect date is a long walk across a short pier followed by being bathed in gummy bears and doing my ta return for the last 5 years. *cough* sorry for that... i erm... had too much exposure to sandra bullock at work today... *shifty eyes*

so yeah. thats me. more or less. hopefully less than more, i'd like to think there's more to me but then again im a compulsive liar so maybe that IS all there is to me!! buahaha! you might never find out if there is or not!! ahhh!! the sheer EVILNESS of it!! GENIUS!!!

ok ok, im going im going... exit, stage left. *dramatically throws scarf over one shoulder and saunters off somewhat wobbly*

Thought it was worth posting incase anyone happened to be making the trip and had a bigish car to bring him back to his lesbian. He's lovely, friendly, and cute to boot ;)

Hoping someone can bring my best friend home!

Thanx for reading..

Do something different, see if you have what it takes to win...

I've started a new Australian community called aussie_realty, but with a difference. This isn't a community, but rather a game.

You will compete against other players in face-offs and one by one you will be asked to vote each other out of the game until only one champion stands tall and proud. Do you think that champion could be you? You have this week to sign up so be quick.

It is a great way to meet other Australians and just beat your boredom. It is a fun game which I'm sure you will all love.

Give it a shot.

HOUSEMATE WANTED..... SYDNEY [09 Mar 2005|10:35am]

We're 2 lesbians living on the North Shore of Sydney (Normanhurst) Our house is 4 bedrooms, and we're renting out 2 of the rooms as one. They're separated by a sliding door (ideal for small loungeroom and bedroom) One of the rooms has a built in wardrobe and wall mounted air con/heater. It also has it's own rear entry. (scuse the pun) It's a 4 min walk to the station, and 5 min drive to Hornsby. The house is furnished, airy and sunny. We have 2 dogs and a cat, so pets are negotiable. Rent is $150/week and bond is 2 weeks rent. Available within the next couple of eeks depending on your situation.

cross posted...sorry
